The Man's Guide to Proper Beard Care

Trimming and Shaping the Beard

One of the most important aspects of proper beard care is to trim and shape it to keep a clean look.

Method 1: Scissors and Comb

This traditional beard trimming method is still the best. Comb the beard up using a wide-tooth comb, then cut across the comb using barber scissors. This allows for a fine degree of control over length and shape and also results in the fewest split ends. However, it is a slow, exacting process and can be difficult for the beginner-- especially if the desired result is a uniform length across the beard.

Method 2: Beard Trimmer

A simpler and quicker solution is the electric beard trimmer, an automatic razor with an attached plastic comb guide. The guide is adjustable for different lengths, and more expensive trimmers will offer greater control and more fine settings. Trimmers are powered in three ways: wall plug, rechargeable cordless or battery-powered cordless. Trusted trimmer brands include Remington, Braun, Norelco and Panasonic.

A Note on Contouring

Unless a wild look is a goal, there will likely be areas of the face - such as the upper cheeks or on the neck - that are shaved clean. The Men's Razor Buying Guide details the various options for shaving.

Cleaning the Beard

Like the rest of a man's hair, the beard requires regular cleaning and moisturizing. Do not use soap, as it can leave the hair brittle and damaged. Instead, use shampoo and conditioner, preferably with moisturizer, to help moisturize the naturally dry beard hairs.

Clean the beard gently. Excessive scrubbing can damage or rip out beard hair.

Daily Beard Maintenance

Beard hair has a natural tendency to become wiry and wild as it grows; but with a bit of daily maintenance, it's possible to combat this. These products will give a beard that full, soft and controlled look--and keep it smelling beautiful.

Beard Oil

A mix of essential oils, such as jojoba, almond or avocado, beard oil can soften the beard, and, over time, can make the beard seem fuller and more luscious --with only a few drops a day. Beard oils also contain scenting agents, generally naturally based, for a pleasant, manly odor. There's quite a range of scents, so look for one that's appealing.

Popular brands include Beard Brand, Dream Beard, and Burroughs. (Note: avoid beard oils with olive oil, which doesn't absorb into the follicles well and leave an oily residue.)
